Scam Alert

Message from the Australian Tax Office (ATO)

Scammers are contracting people to say they have a tax debt and that they must pay immediately:

  • The call may be a robotic recording
  • The caller will claim to be from or representing the ATO, often the ATO Tax Crime and Investigation Unit - the most common names scammers are currently using are
    • Alexander Lee
    • Michael Andersen or Harris
    • James Anderson
    • Matthew Clark
    • Mark Brown, Mark Davis or mark Konza.
  • They will tell you that a complaint has been made against  you and you are committing tax fraud or claim that you have to pay a debt that you know nothing about.
  • They may threaten immediate arrest or court if you don't pay straight away - they wont provide explanations or allow you to ask questions about the debt and often get aggressive or abusive.
  • They will ask you to pay using non-legitimate payment methods such as iTunes, store gift cards, or pre-paid visa cards.
  • They may provide you a number to call them on that is not a number from our Phone us (/about-ato/about-us/contact-us/phone-us/) page - the top five phone numbers scammers are asking people to phone in September are
    • 02 8005 1164
    • 02 5306 2285
    • 03 4309 4093
    • 02 8006 9493
    • 02 5306 2281
  •  Its OK to hang up and phone the ATO on 1800 008 540 to see if the call was legitimate or report a scam.

Do you claim your Family Tax Benefit as a lump sum? If so time is running out.

Centrelink changed the rules a few years ago, parents who DO NOT receive their Family Tax Benefits on a fortnightly basis MUST NOW complete a lump sum claim form each year.

Families must complete their 2015/2016 tax return and submit their online lump sum claim form by 30 June 2017.

With less than 3 month before the end of financial year, we urge families who have not already completed their income tax return and have not submitted their lump sum claim form, to do so now.

We have had many families ring us up in panic after the end of financial year, saying they forgot to claim their Family Tax Benefits and it heart breaking to have to say, that it is too late.

We would appreciate if you could remind the parents at your centre that this deadline is approaching, by send an email or distributing the attached flyer.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our office on 02 9524 2744 or by email info@twelve.com.au

An Interview with Derek Nolan

In an interview with Derek Nolan, the owner of Twelve Chartered Accountants, we asked him the "12 Questions" that business owners would like to know.

1. What made you start your own business?

I looked around at some of the more successful people working in the city and knew that many had made big personal sacrifices.  Many had health problems; some had broken marriages while almost all spent at least 60 hours a week chained to their desk.   This was not the life for me and my family so I started Twelve Chartered Accountants based in Sutherland Shire, close to home and my family.

2. What kind of clients do you work with?

The majority of clients I work with are family owned businesses, typical turnover size between $2 to $5 million per year; however, I do have some clients with a turnover in excess of $10 million per year. Read more…
